The UN Adopted a Treaty to Protect Marine Biodiversity in International Waters.
The High Seas Treaty
In May 2023, the United Nations adopted a landmark treaty to protect marine biodiversity in international waters, often called the “High Seas Treaty.”
Why It’s Needed
Two‑thirds of the ocean lies beyond national jurisdiction, yet exploitation—fishing, mining, shipping—threatens ecosystems. The treaty establishes mechanisms for marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and equitable sharing of genetic resources.
Key Provisions
Countries agreed to create networks of protected zones, regulate activities, and ensure benefits from marine genetic resources are shared fairly. It’s a major step toward ocean governance.
Global Impact
The treaty strengthens conservation, supports climate resilience, and aligns with the goal of protecting 30% of Earth’s land and sea by 2030. Ratification and enforcement remain challenges, but momentum is strong.
